Current state
Live feeds only; unavailable data stays empty and is listed in diagnostics.
Why is the grid like this?
A generated explanation from demand, carbon, wind/solar, weather, ramp and price signals.
Building the first view…
The app will combine live grid, market and weather APIs. Missing feeds will be left unavailable rather than filled with a sample scenario.
Grid stress index
Transparent 0-100 heuristic: loaded pressure factors are weighted, renormalised, and summed. Not an official security-of-supply measure.
The score is a weighted 0-100 blend of loaded live inputs only: demand vs recent p90 (20%), residual demand after wind/solar (17%), carbon intensity (15%), low wind vs capacity (15%), low solar vs capacity (9%), price vs recent p90 (9%), largest 3-hour wind/solar ramp (8%), and frequency deviation (7%). Missing inputs are skipped and the remaining weights are renormalised.
Carbon and stress outlook
Carbon forecast, derived stress outlook, and clean/stress windows.
Generation mix
Current fuel mix from recent complete Elexon/NESO MW data where usable, otherwise Carbon Intensity percentages.
Generation mix history
Stacked Elexon actual generation by fuel type in GW. Defaults to the last 4 days; older ranges load where the public APIs return data.
Renewable ramp & curtailment tracker
Upcoming grid wind/solar forecast ramps in GW plus “weather says more than actual” underperformance flags.
Weather-driven renewable forecast
Open-Meteo GFS/UKMO/ECMWF variables for the selected region/postcode: wind power proxy, solar radiation proxy, and synoptic risk drivers.
Each weather call asks Open-Meteo for GFS seamless, UKMO seamless and ECMWF IFS hourly fields. Wind weather uses model-averaged 100 m wind speed passed through a simple turbine power curve: 0 below 3 m/s, 100% from 12-25 m/s, and cut-out above 25 m/s. Solar weather uses shortwave radiation scaled against 750 W/m2 with a cloud-cover penalty. The percentages are weather potential indices, not grid generation shares; the adjacent ramp chart uses grid/Elexon/NESO GW forecasts where available.
Anomaly detector
Flags jumps, high percentiles, renewable shortfalls, price spikes and data-quality issues.
Demand, residual demand and price
Residual demand is approximated as demand minus wind and solar generation or forecast.
