EXTRA OMNES

The words have not yet been spoken. This is the election that will invent them.
One thousand and six days · Nineteen electors · The roof comes off.

Clement IV is dead in the papal palace at Viterbo, and Christendom holds its breath — for three years. Charles of Anjou's French party and the party of the Empire each have the votes to deny the other a pope, and neither will blink. The city will lock you in, cut your bread, and take the tiles off over your heads. Choose your cardinal — one of the nineteen who were truly there — and outlast the deadlock, the weather and the kings; or add the absent and the doubtful for an alternate College.
